Lumbar spondylosis

Arghh!!! My back hurts.

Sorry, I can’t come as I have a really bad back ache.

Ouch!! I can’t bend as I have back pain.

How many of us have been unable to go out and about due to back aches? At such a tender age, most of us have at least had one episode of severe back pain abstaining us from doing our daily activities.

But why has it become so common?

Obviously, the food we gobble and the couch potatoes we have become, prevent us from having a healthy body. It is the lack of exercise and the unhealthy food we eat that decides the status of our body. We never actually realize when the slight back pain we disregarded worsens to situations preventing us from even moving an inch.

Therefore, we should acknowledge the various conditions of the spine and try to prevent them from occurring. One such condition is lumbar spondylosis. When it comes to Ayurvedic treatment for lumbar spondylosis, Ayurveda offers comprehensive approaches to alleviate this condition and promote spinal health. Let us excavate the knowledge regarding the same.

Know more about lumbar spondylosis

The vertebrae have five segments namely :

  • Cervical
  • Thoracic
  • Lumbar
  • Sacral
  • Coccyx

A deformity in any of the above segments can have grave repercussions on the other parts of the spine and even on the underlying nerves and muscles. There is a cushion-like disc in between each of the vertebrae which are filled with water. This disc stabilizes the vertebrae and keeps them in position.

Lumbar spondylosis occurs when the vertebrae, disc, and joints of the lumbar segment are continuously injured over a long period of time. The incessant wear and tear on these parts decrease the water content of the discs, increases depositions, and thus causes stiffness and strain in the lumbar region.

Now let us look at the causes and symptoms of lumbar spondylosis in detail.

The factors that pose a reason for lumbar spondylosis are as follows :

  • Continuous exaggerated movements can cause harm to the discs and cause lumbar spondylosis
  • Due to age – due to the gradual aging process, there is natural degeneration that occurs elevating the chances of lumbar spondylosis

There can be a plethora of other reasons causing lumbar spondylosis depending on the age and chronicity of the disease.

AyurVAID Approach

Ayurveda interprets diseases and their identification with the help of doshas causing it. The tridoshas, namely vata, pitta, and kapha have certain characteristic features that get aggravated when the disease caused by the same dosha is manifested. This is how an ardent believer in Ayurveda understands a disease.

The vata vyadhi is a cohort of diseases explained in Ayurveda that comprises a surfeit of diseases caused due to the vata dosha. As the vata dosha is responsible for it, the treatment is difficult and requires an ample amount of time and rest to cure it. Therefore vata vyadhi is considered a maha vyadhi.

When it comes to lumbar spondylosis treatment, which can be correlated with vata vyadhi, Ayurveda adopts a comprehensive approach.

One of the vata vyadhi is Kati Graha.

Have you heard of it?

Kati means waist region Graha means an inconvenience. Therefore katigraha means pain in the low back region. As the lumbar segment is present in the low back region, Lumbar spondylosis can be correlated to Kati Graha in Ayurveda.
