Frequently Asked Questions
What is MND ?
Motor neuron disease is a group of progressive neurological diseases that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control essential voluntary muscle activity such as waking, ingestion, speaking, etc.
Normally, messages from the nerve cells in the brain called upper motor neurons are transmitted to the nerve cells in the brainstem and spinal cord called the lower motor neurons. They then transmit them to the concerned muscles.
When there are disruptions in the signals between the lower motor neurons and the muscles, the muscles do not work properly. Due to a lack of movement, the muscles begin getting wasted and suffer uncontrollable twitching. When there are disruptions between the upper motor neurons, the movements and the limbs become stiff with presentations of exaggerated reflexes. Gradually with time, the efficacy to control movements is alleviated.
