Ulcerative Colitis

Our digestive system is a genius yet sophisticated arrangement. Processing the elixir of our life aka food, splitting the nutrients, distributing them- the digestive system answers all calls when it comes to the sustenance of our health. We are still in the dark regarding the mysteries of the body, but we do know that it is not as simple as it seems. That is why we mark the cause of some diseases to be unknown. Ulcerative Colitis is one such disease that requires specialized ulcerative colitis treatment to manage its symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected.

Know more about Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the large intestine where the inner walls of the colon and rectum suffer from inflammation and ulcers. It is commonly referred to as a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Though we are not sure of the real reasons behind this, theories accuse a spectrum of factors such as faulty diet, environmental threats, genetics, and even certain medicines. However, the disease is usually labeled autoimmune. The disease was first identified around the 1850s and has shown a rise in incidence since the 1950s. Today, it is estimated that 1 in 20 per 1 lakh people newly suffer from ulcerative colitis, according to yearly global statistics. The age group at risk is mainly 30-40. Males and females are equally vulnerable.

Signs and Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

The symptoms of ulcerative colitis often manifest over time.

  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Blood in stools that go on for weeks
  • Diarrhea
  • Frequent urge to void the stools
  • A feeling of incomplete defecation (tenesmus)
  • Pain in the rectum
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Malaise
  • Nausea
  • Fever, in extreme cases

The signs and symptoms are not deadly, but the complications such as megacolon, hepatitis, and colon cancer can be.

Diagnosis and Lab investigations

Various tests can be used to diagnose ulcerative colitis, of which endoscopy remains the key one. A biopsy can be done along with an endoscopy to confirm the disease. Blood tests such as Complete Blood Count (CBC), Liver Function Test (LFT), Renal Function Tests (RFT), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), ESR, and electrolyte analysis are prescribed. Imaging techniques such as CT scans can be used to assess the condition of the intestines. A stool culture may also help to rule out other suspicions.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Ulcerative colitis

Acharya Charaka coined the term Mahasrotas to mention the digestive system. Agni, the digestive fire inside all living beings, is thought to be the promoter of health according to Ayurveda. When Agni is impaired, the digestive system will not be spared. Raktatisara, where there is blood in stool, can be correlated to the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Faulty dietary habits like reliance on repeated long-term use of salty, sour, pungent, alkaline, and sharp food, and psychological factors such as krodha (anger), malsarya (jealousy), etc are thought to trigger pitta and damage the Agni. This in turn can impair the whole digestion process and cause diarrhea (pittatisara). If this continues, Rakta dhatu will be involved and the condition will be turned into Raktatisara. Lifestyle management and medical intervention Can be done in cases of atisara. Starting with a light diet, the Agni should be corrected with Agni deepana (kindling the digestive fire), ama pachana (eliminating the uncooked substances/ metabolic waste and blockage), grahi (stopping diarrhea) medicines, sattvavajaya chikitsa (psychotherapy), nourishing the body with right kinds of treatment, ulcer healing vasti such as piccha vasti and anuvasana vasti, etc can be administered.
